5 Great Discs For New Players To Try (And advanced players to keep in the bag as well)

Hey there Good Vibers!

Disc Golf can be extremely fun and overwhelming. This is especially true when starting out.

As a beginner, there are so many brands, plastics, characteristics, pretty colors and awesome designs that are fighting for our attention.

So we decided to put together a quick list of discs a new player can use to enjoy the learning process, get those beautiful long flights that get us hooked, and lean on into the future when the skillset increases.

To make the process easier for you, we've curated a list of the top five beginner-friendly discs from MVP, Axiom, Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside Discs. These discs are designed to help new players develop their skills and enjoy the game to the fullest.

1. Axiom - Proxy (Putt and Approach)

The Axiom Proxy is an excellent choice for beginners due to its straight flight and minimal fade. As a putt and approach disc, the Proxy offers outstanding control and accuracy, making it a reliable tool for sinking those critical putts and shaping upshots. The Electron plastic provides a comfortable grip and a consistent feel in all weather conditions, giving you the confidence you need to improve your short game. With a bunch of different plastics, including Eclipse 2.0 (glows), this can be a staple in your bag for your whole disc golf career.

A Dynamic Discs Judge is also a staple in many pro's bags. Great putt and approach discs in many different plastics and colors.

2. Axiom - Envy (Putt and Approach)

The Axiom Envy is a versatile putt and approach disc that provides both stability and glide. This disc excels at holding any line you put it on, making it an ideal choice for new players learning to control their throws. Whether you're driving off the tee or navigating the fairway, the Envy's reliable flight will quickly become a staple in your bag. Just a tad bit more stable than the proxy, so it is a perfect compliment to and neutral or slightly understable putter.

3. MVP - Uplink (Midrange)

Nestled into the perfect sweet spot of understability for a wide variety of arm speeds, the Uplink is destined to take its place among the great line-shaping midranges. With flight numbers of 5 | 5 | -3 | 0.5, the Uplink will be carving touch anhyzers or sweet hyzer-flips through the woods for experienced players. Lower arm speed players will find the Uplink to be an extremely straight and controllable midrange — something they can learn the game with.

4. Latitude 64  - Diamond  (Fairway Driver)

The Latitude 64 Retro Diamond is specifically designed for beginners, including juniors, and players with lower arm speeds. This lightweight, understable driver offers a high degree of forgiveness and allows newer players to achieve greater distances with less effort. The Diamond's user-friendly flight path will help you build confidence in your long-range shots.

5. Westside Discs - Hatchet (Fairway Driver)

The Westside Discs Hatchet is a beginner-friendly fairway driver that provides an easy-to-control, understable flight. It is an ideal choice for players with lower arm speeds or those looking to add distance to their drives without sacrificing accuracy. The Hatchet's reliable turn and glide make it a go-to disc for shaping shots in the fairway and building confidence as you progress in the sport.

Here are some Tips for Choosing Your Discs.

  • Start with lower-speed discs. As a beginner, it's best to begin with lower-speed discs (speed ratings 1-7) that are easier to control and require less power to achieve distance.

  • Consider lighter weights: Lighter discs (150-165g) can be more forgiving for beginners and offer increased control and distance potential.

  • Experiment with different plastics. Discs are available in various plastic blends, each with unique characteristics. Try different plastics to find the one that feels most comfortable in your hand and suits your playing style.

  • Seek advice from experienced players. Don't hesitate to ask experienced disc golfers for recommendations or tips. Their insights can be invaluable as you navigate your way through the sport.

Remember, disc golf is all about having fun and improving your skills over time. So, grab your discs, hit the course, and enjoy the journey of becoming a disc golf enthusiast with these fantastic beginner discs from MVP, Axiom, Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside Discs!
